A.D.H., Shigellosis Cases Spike in Arkansas

AROUND ARKANSAS-- A dramatic spike in Shigellosis cases are making their way around Arkansas.

According to the State Department of Health, there have been 568 cases of the stomach illness reported in the Natural State since January 1.

We're told the illness is most commonly spread in nursing homes and child care facilities.

But , according to the health department, it was an outbreak at the Walmart headquarters in Bentonville last month that could be to blame for about 213 cases of Shigellosis.

Although, only 45 of those cases were confirmed.

The health department says the illness was spread through food served at the Salsarita's in the food court.

Since the first reports back on June 18th, state health inspectors have made repeated visits to the cafeteria.

In the most recent report from the health department, no additional violations were found, but the first inspection of Salsarita's found nine violations.

And a subsequent inspection found seven.

The health department is continuing to follow up on the case.
