ARKANSAS -- A new study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that Arkansas is among the 10 highest states for prescribing prescription painkillers. Ten of the highest prescribing states for painkillers are in the south. The CDC says health care providers in the highest-prescribing states wrote almost 3 times as many opioid painkiller prescriptions per person as those in other states. Higher prescribing of painkillers is associated with more overdose deaths. The study says more than 40 people die each day from prescription drug overdose. The CDC suggests states increase use of prescription drug monitoring programs, which are state-run databases that track prescriptions for painkillers and can help find problems in over prescribing.
