Arkansas Game & Fish, 'Boaters Beware'

LITTLE ROCK, AR-- Safety is also top of mind for many boaters who are already hitting the water across the Natural State.

That's why the Arkansas Game and Fish Department is taking steps to help keep you safe.

So far, at least seven people have been killed in boating-related accidents this year alone.

That number is higher than the same time last year. Some of the common problems include boat collisions, boaters not wearing life-jackets, and people who are not aware of their surroundings.

"Boating accidents happen, people get thrown out of the boat, people just fall out of the boat and a lot of times if they don't have on their life jacket, they don't come up," says Bob Cushing with Arkansas Game & Fish.

Officials say it doesn't matter if you're a good swimmer. Anything can happen if you're not prepared on the water.

In all, there were 15 boat-related deaths last year.
