According to the National Retail Federation, the average family with children enrolled in grades kindergarten through high school will spend $669.28.
That's 5% or $134 more than last year.
Increased spending on school supplies is attributed as the biggest reason for the rising cost.
The average family can expect to pay just over $100 on things like pens, paper and calculators.
Experts say as school budgets tighten, parents are being asked to buy more of their child's supplies.
