Well of Grace Church needed more space in its building, so Pastor Kevin Cowan started looking for chairs to replace pews.
"We were going to take the pews out and we thought we could go from about 90, sitting about 90 people to about 125," said Cowan.
He found an ad on Craigslist. He exchanged phone calls, texts, and emails with the seller and felt confident in the purchase. Pastor Cowan wired $3,180 to the seller but the chairs never showed up and the money is gone.
"To do it to anybody is pretty bad. About any Christian would think that's God's money, you know when you put it in the offering plate it's not yours anymore. So I've been praying that God deals with him and changes his heart, first off, but naturally we'd like to have our money back," explained Cowen.
Cowen has filed police reports. We tried to call the seller, but our messages were not returned.
Well of Grace was not the only church that lost money. In order to get free shipping Cowen needed to order 200 chairs, he had help from another small church in the area.
