Missouri Officer on Leave After Man Drowns While in Custody

LAKE OF THE OZARKS,MO - The Missouri Water Patrol officer involved in the weekend drowning of a man in custody has been placed on administrative leave, according to a spokesman for Troop F of the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The officer had arrested Brandon Ellingson, 20, of Clive, Iowa, Saturday afternoon around 5:20 on suspicion of boating while intoxicated and was transporting him when Ellingson stood up in the boat and either jumped or fell overboard, according to spokesman Sgt. Paul Reinch.

The trooper attempted to save the Ellingson, who was handcuffed and wearing a life vest, Rainch said, but was unsuccessful.

Troop F of the patrol is investigating the incident, Riench said, and the trooper is on paid leave, as is customary after any trooper-involved incident resulting in death.

The drowing occurred on the main channel of the lake near the 3.5 mile marker. Ellingson’s body was recovered from the lake Sunday morning after a search was conducted.

A friend of the family tells KCCI in Des Moines that Ellingson was a standout football player at West Des Moines Valley High School, having graduated in 2012 and had most recently been attending Arizona State University.
