UPDATE: Mississippi Delays Execution for Mom of Man Who Confessed to Murder

UPDATE: The State Supreme Court wants more time to review the case.

Attorneys for Michelle Byrom filed a motion for review after her son confessed to the crime several times. Byrom was in the hospital when her husband was killed in 1999. Her son testified she hired one of his friends to pull the trigger. But attorneys say he confessed in jail house letters and to a psychologist, neither of which was heard in court.

Byrom's attorneys are asking for both to be fully explored.

Original Story:

FOX 24 -- In Mississippi, the state is pushing for the execution of a woman Thursday.

Michelle Byrom was convicted of hiring someone to kill her husband in 1999. Her advocates say she deserves a stay, because her son reportedly confessed four times to murdering his abusive father: in three jailhouse letters smuggled to his mother, and once in a statement given to a court-appointed psychologist. But Byrom's defense attorneys, trying their first capital murder case, never had the confession letters entered into evidence. Byrom's son ended up taking a plea deal in exchange for a reduced sentence, testifying against his mother and pinning the plot on her.

If Byrom is put to death, she will be the first woman Mississippi has executed in 70 years.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood has requested that 57-year-old Michelle Byrom be executed by lethal injection Thursday for the murder which prosecutors said she plotted. Edward Byrom Sr. was fatally shot in his home in Iuka, Mississippi, while Michelle was in the hospital receiving treatment for double pneumonia.

The state Supreme Court has the final say on executions and has yet to confirm the date or weigh in on the request.
