Doing Good: Arkansas Miss Amazing Pageant Celebrates Girls and Women with Disabilities

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- - For years the Special Olympics have served as a vehicle to break down the walls of misconceptions about people with disabilities, but there is a new door opening into the pageant world. That door provides opportunities for girls and women, who have disabilities, to build confidence and self esteem in the supportive environment of the Miss Amazing Pageant.

"Just watching it or being up close and personal, with the participants, you get to see so much," said Arkansas Miss Amazing Pageant Director Maddie Stinson.

For nearly a decade the Miss Amazing Pageant has strived to provide a platform for young women with disabilities to define themselves on their own terms. That is something Pageant Director Maddie Stinson and Committee member Jessica Phillippe want to bring to the Natural State.

"It's new," explained Phillippe. "It's something that hasn't happened before, especially in Arkansas, along with the fact that we're supporting not only just women but we're supporting women with disabilities."

Though Stinson swears she does not cry easily, the emotional element to the pageant does its part to tug on the heart strings.

"It always gets to me," Stinson admitted. "You see the girls and the joy that they get, even if just getting crowned with whatever it [the award] is, some of their reactions are priceless."

While Stinson has partnered with contestants in Miss Amazing Pageants elsewhere as a buddy, Phillippe has never been to a pageant before. But she said she just had to get involved because just the idea of it spoke volumes to her.

"These women and these girls are beautiful and they have abilities that they need to showcase, and that needs to get out there," Phillippe declared.

Organizers told us one of the great benefits of the pageant is that it helps enhance the social and communication skills for the contestants. And the cost of entry for the contestants is just five cans of food that the winning queen then delivers to a local food pantry.
