Doing Good Report: Girls on the Run

Developing important life skills while finding strength from the bond among teammates. In this week's Doing Good Report, we show you how Girls on the Run helps girls find their way in the world through achievements, friendship and empowerment.

Sonora Elementary Fourth-Grader Lily Reed says, "We just help each other out."

Sonora Elementary School fourth-grader Lily Reed is a shining example of the impact the Girls on the Run program can have. She's found friendship and a new level of confidence by taking part in the 10-week program.

Lily Reed says, "Usually, whenever you start, you're pretty shy. But then you get to know one another for, like, a long time."

According to a study by Girls on the Run's national organization, the girls who take part report 85 percent improvement in confidence, competence, caring, character or connection. Fourth grade teacher and Girls on the Run Coach Tom Northfell says he's seen that reflected in Lily through her involvement.

Girls on the Run Coach Tom Northfell says, "She was a little bit shy when she first came into the program, but she's not anymore because she's met all these different participants and built relationships."

Girls on the Run says physical activity levels decline starting at age 10 and continue to decrease throughout adolescence.

Girls on the Run Program Director Nicole Urban says, "We have our life lessons and the skills that they're learning but we're also teaching them be physically active, whether it's running or walking they're getting that physical activity needed for the young girls in their daily lives."

Once the girls complete the 10-week program they lean on one another to compete in a five-k run.

Lily Reed says, "I see, like helping each other out by telling them 'you're good at this,' like good things."

Coach Tom Northfell says no one has ever missed out on crossing the finish line.

Lily Reed cheers, "Girls on the Run is so much fun. Girls on the Run is number one. Woo!"

Parents have told Girls on the Run their children have experienced a high degree of personal growth and respect for others through their participation in the program.
