Doing Good: The Boys and Girls Club of Benton County

ROGERS, Ark. -- The Boys and Girls Club of Benton County is a place that hopes to enable all young people to to reach their full potential in a safe and caring environment. Their older, teen-aged members are a big reason why they are able to accomplish that goal.

"It's a great place to actually trust with your kids and it gives back a lot," Club member Melany Chavez shared.

Chavez has spent nearly a decade at the Club. She values what the teens before her gave back to the club, while working as members of the staff, and she looks forward to getting the same chance to give back as she nears her next birthday.

"I've always seen how they like manage the place, how they take care of it, how they work here," Chavez said. "And so I'm 15 and I have to be 16 to work here, so I'm just pretty much counting down the days until I can work here."

Chavez credits older members like 2017 Youth of the Year winner Fernanda Alcantara for the role they have played in inspiring her, as well as others, to step up. Ferny, as she is known best by the Club, uses her own life experiences to help others.

"To take that and take it the extra mile and actually teach people and share her stories with others is what makes her so special, and really the poster child for Boys & Girls Club," Boys & Girls Club of Benton County Board Member Jeffrey Evans explained.

The Club's Rogers location is bursting at the seams, so they are building a new facility just for the 124 teens they currently serve, which is something Chavez thinks will be a big asset for both the teens and the younger club members.

"It's be better for them to interact and then there's be more space for the teens to just hang out," Chavez said.

"We need to get them a separate facility to drive attendance and really pull them out of the elements where they could actually go in the wrong direction, as they're growing up," Evans shared. "So it's a huge opportunity for the Rogers community."

Once the new Teen Center opens up that will clear the way for more younger club members to join at the current facility, which there are 87 families on the wait list right now.

The Club's Sip and Savor fundraising event will take place on Thursday, October 5 from 6-9 p.m. at the Record in Bentonville. Tickets are $50 for individuals and $90 for couples. Click here for more information.
