Doing Good: The Jones Center Ice Rink Offers Fun and Reason to Move to NWA

SPRINGDALE, AR -- - The Christmas and holiday displays are already up in stores and thoughts are shifting to wintry fun and activities. Though our local ponds may not be a likely candidate for you to lace up some skates and sip on some hot chocolate, there is a place nearby where you can.

There is really nothing quite like the feeling you get while gliding across the ice. You can find out for yourself at the The Jones Center in Springdale.

"It's the only year-round ice rink in all of Northwest Arkansas," Jones Center Marketing and Communication Director Jake Lane said.

Lane considers the ice rink as a point of pride for the whole operation and expects it to start getting pretty busy with the changing of the seasons.

"We love to make it really the center piece of our facility, being now that we're into the fall season the ice rink really starts to pick up," Lane explained.

Lane is quick to share The Jones Center is all about accessibility to its activities for a low cost. That core mission includes access to the rink.

"It's very affordable, it's very accessible," Lane shared. "People can also get scholarships and memberships here.

"So if you want to skate regularly, you can at a discounted rate. So that's something that a lot of people have taken advantage of ever since we rolled that out."

Lane pointed out The Jones Center and its ice rink as important economic tools for the region as well because they have actually received calls from area companies who are recruiting folks to move here from Michigan and Minnesota.

"Maybe it's the hockey culture or the ice skating culture is very important to their family and they wouldn't come and work here in Northwest Arkansas if it were not for having a year-round ice rink," Lane offered.

The Razorbacks hockey team plays here and there is even a curling club, plus lots of other opportunities for you to enjoy.

"We've got a figure skating club," Lane said. "We've got youth hockey. We have adult figure skaters and then we have just the general public for them to come and just go ice skating."

They also have cheap skate rentals too, so you can embrace thrill of the chill yourself.

KNWA is your home for the 2018 winter olympics and you just might see a face from The Jones Center there. Our Olympics correspondent Aaron Nolan will feature a local curler in a future story. Click here to learn more about The Jones Center's ice rink.
