Pink Courage: 'I'll Fight That Fight'

BENTONVILLE, AR - "My mom, actually, got diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer when I was 15. So, one year older than our daughter is now... She battled it for four years. She was 36 when she was diagnosed, and then she passed away at 40."

Nicole Bagley grew up watching her mom battle cancer, so she has always been very diligent about doing self-exams. In 2012, at 34-years-old, she found something suspicious.

"It was Stage 3 and I went through four months of chemotherapy, six and a half weeks of radiation, double mastectomies. I found out that I carry the BRCA 2 gene. So I had to have a hysterectomy since breast cancer and ovarian cancer co-relate."

After a year of treatment, she was in the clear. In October of 2016, her regular lab work came back looking good. But her doctor decided to go ahead and test her tumor markers.

"They had tripled, so he said let's do some more tests and scans and see if we can see what's going on and then that's when it came back that it was in my spine... Even though it's Stage 4, I tend not to let my mind wander to those negative thoughts and just stay on the positive side."

She now goes for monthly injections and takes a daily oral chemotherapy pill. This year, she is also the Komen Ozark Race for the Cure Honorary Survivor Chair.

"My fight is my family and they're the ones that keep me going... Me carrying the gene, having to worry about it being passed on to them is why research and funding and Komen is so important... If me going through this and fighting this fight makes somebody else aware, or potentially saves them then I'll fight that fight."

Bagley said many times, people are afraid to approach someone with cancer because they do not know what to say. She said to not shy away. Be there for the person. Just telling them you are there to talk to or even offering to go to lunch or grab coffee means the world.
