Pink Courage: Race for the Cure 2018 in the Works

ROGERS, AR - It is already time to start gearing up for next year's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. In this month's Pink Courage report, we are showing you what could be new in 2018.

"It was a little bit cold, a little bit rainy, but a whole lot of fun," Lauren Marquette, the Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Ozark.

The 19th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was a success. Nearly 5,000 people participated, raising more than $850,000.

"I know there's a lot of causes in Northwest Arkansas, but the benefit of Komen Ozark is those funds stay local and help local organizations like community clinic and six or seven others that are actually making an impact on cancer services here in Northwest Arkansas," Tyler Clark, the Teams Chair for Susan G. Komen Ozark.

To be exact, 75% of funds raised stay local. That is a big reason why you see a sea of pink come race day.

"A lot of women and families have been touched by funds raised at race and want to give back and so... What you see on race day is almost entirely ran by volunteers who have a story whether it's a close family members, whether they're a survivor themselves," said Marquette.

Preparations are already underway for Race for the Cure 2018, which will be the 20th anniversary race. So do not wait until next April to start supporting the mission.

"We started a new VIPink area for our top team fundraisers and that was a big hit and so we're planning on making that bigger and better next year... We have some other surprises too in store," said Marquette.

"Get those teams going. We'd love to see an increase in our 10K and 5K, our more competitive races... We're more than just the pink ribbon, we're here year round and helping people locally," said Clark.

Fundraising for this year's teams and individuals is open until June 30, and of course anyone can give to Komen Ozark year round.
