Running back Alex Collins was named SEC Freshman of the Week and senior defensive end Chris Smith earned Defensive Lineman of the Week. Collins earned his second straight conference freshman of the week recognition, and Arkansas is the first team with multiple conference player of the week recipients on the same week this season.
Collins became the first SEC freshman to rush for 100 yards in each of his first three career games and first true freshman in the NCAA to open his career with at least three consecutive 100-yard rushing games since Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson in 2004. Collins, a Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native, rushed 25 times for 115 yards and one touchdown against the Golden Eagles. He leads the SEC and ranks fourth in the NCAA, first among freshmen, with 418 rushing yards this season. His average of 139.9 rushing yards per game ranks second in the conference and eighth in the nation. Collins also ranks seventh in the SEC with an average of 139.9 all-purpose yards per game.
Smith recorded a career-high 3.0 sacks, tied for the highest single-game output in the NCAA this season, as part of his five-tackle performance that included two quarterback hurries. His first two sacks were recorded on back-to-back plays late in the first half with Southern Miss near midfield, ending the Golden Eagles’ final drive of the half. The Mount Ulla, N.C., native is tied for first in the NCAA with an average of 1.5 sacks per game, and his 5.5 tackles for loss this season lead the SEC and rank sixth in the nation.
The Razorbacks make their first road trip of the year this week, traveling to Piscataway, N.J., to face Rutgers on Saturday. The game, which is Arkansas’ first in the northeast since 1940, airs on ESPN at 2:30 p.m. CT.
