LITTLE ROCK, AR-- Last week's severe winter storms left extensive damage in areas of Arkansas, prompting Governor Mike Beebe to declare more than 20 counties state disaster areas.

Baxter, Crawford, Faulkner, Franklin, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Johnson, Logan, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Newton, Polk, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Scott, Sebastian, Sharp, Stone and Van Buren Counties were declared Friday, which could make them eligible for assistance for clean-up and repair.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management is already on the ground with representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in about a dozen of the affected counties. Their joint efforts will determine whether Arkansas may qualify for federal assistance.

If Arkansas does qualify, it will be for public-assistance funds to help counties recover and repair damaged infrastructure.
