The Lottery Commission took no action Monday during a regular meeting, but commission members indicated a desire to move forward with allowing debit cards for lottery sales.
Currently, only cash sales for instant and online tickets are approved.
Lottery commissioner Mark Scott of Bentonville says now is the time for the four-year-old lottery to explore the option.
"I just think we're missing an opportunity to reach folks who want to play the lottery that don't have that opportunity because they don't carry cash with them," Scott says.
The Lottery Commission could vote on the plan in January.
Lottery director Bishop Woosley says if the commission approves debit card sales, it could ask the general assembly to take up the idea during the fiscal session in February.
