The question is: What should I look for in a veterinarian?
"One of the most important things is experience," Dr. Hancock says. "You also want to look for a veterinarian that practices the quality medicine that you're looking for. You want to find a veterinarian who is willing to work within a budget. Communication is a really important part of that. You also want to look for things like, make sure you're comfortable with the facility. You want to find a veterinarian who has the equipment as well as the technical experience and the ability to provide the range of services that your pet may need.
"Surgical standards are another thing that you want to look for. Not all veterinarians practice the same surgical standards. You want to make sure that they're using proper sterile technique. You want to make sure that they have the ability to provide not just basic services, but also the more sophisticated services in case your pet might need that.
"You also want to make sure that you can develop a personal connection with your veterinarian. You want to use a veterinarian who you feel comfortable with, that they're going to listen to you, that they're going to be able to communicate not only a diagnosis, but also a treatment plan back to you effectively."
