The planning commission approved the SE Downtown Area Plan by a vote of 6-0. The plan calls for two more entertainment districts to be built in under used parts of town. The planners envision a food scene growing from the old industrial heart of the city, and an arts district on SW A Street, to capitalize on Crystal Bridges and 21c Museum Hotel.
The plan will also add residential housing, from high density complexes to single family homes throughout the area, providing more places for people to live and work downtown.
The City Council will consider the plan next Tuesday, and planners say minor infrastructure work could begin this year, but completion could take more than a decade.
