NORTHWEST ARKANSAS-- A "Code Red" alert is in effect around Northwest Arkansas. The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is issuing an emergency plea to the public for donations, now. The blood supply at the center, reaching record lows, with the shelves nearly empty. Because of the recent weather, donations have fallen by more than 30% in just December. And with a shrinking supply, the center needs all the help it can get.
"A 'code' red is an appeal," says Lora Witcher, with the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks. "And we have less than a one-day supply of blood on the shelves. Optimum is around three days' supply. "It's a very emergency situation for our blood supply." We're told this is just the third tiime in nine years a "red alert" has been issued. In the first round of severe weather, the center tells us it lost about 1,200 potential donations. But it's not too late for you to help.

Eligible donors must be at least sixteen years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. For more information or to locate a blood drive near you, visit the CBCO web site at www.cbco.org or call 1-800-280-5337.
