KNWA -- Consumer Reports researchers track prices all year round and so they can say, with authority, there are a few items ripe for deep discounts in May.  If you're in the market for any of these six items, now's the time to make that purchase:

Athletic apparel and shoes

To get the deepest discounts on athletic apparel Consumer Reports says time it right - look for weekend sales for even better discounts.

Camping and outdoor gear

The magazine notes that buyers should be doubtful of what a tent claims to accommodate (6 person tents may only be comfortable for 4.)  Try before you buy, using store displays and ask if they'll price match online deals.

Carpeting

Once you buy, Consumer Reports recommends keeping carpet looking its best by using an upright, bagged vacuum to keep it clean.

Lawn mowers and tractors

A gas or electric push mower is fine for a small lawn, experts say - but self-propelled gas models are best for slopes and a lawn tractors for property over one-half acre.

Mattresses

Consumer Reports says it's best to buy your mattress in person rather than online, unless you've already tried the identical mattress in a store.  They also offer up this hint: Stores keep the priciest models up front.

Small consumer electronics

If you're in the market for smaller consumer electronics such as an MP3 player, Blu-ray or streaming media player, or a home theater system, you should find some good savings this month.
