BHS Plans For Crowded Campus

Bentonville -- School is back in session, and Bentonville High School's principal says planning is keeping overcrowding under control.

"We're at over 4,300 as of today," Chad Scott says. "The challenges of having that many students obviously is something that just takes a lot of planning."

Ideal capacity at the school is 3,700, and the scheduled opening date for Bentonville West High School is still two years away. However, Scott says the first week is off to a smooth start.

"Things have gone incredibly well," he says. "Yesterday we had a great day... We had schedule pickup in the morning, every student picked up a new schedule that went really smooth, and we had every kid in class by nine o'clock."

Scott says scheduling is the biggest challenge.

"We started this year with a 40 week plan," he says. "We've been counting week by week with our master scheduling, how we were going to get kids into classes."

The high school is using portable classrooms, and some teachers move from room to room when they are not in use.

"We have great people that understand our situation," he says. "Our kids understand the situation, our parents understand the situation, that we have a lot of students here, but we have great people and it works for us."

Crews are preparing the site of Bentonville's West High School, and construction is expected to begin within a month. The campus is scheduled to open in Fall 2016.
