Doing Good - Angel Flight

Northwest Arkansas - Angel Flight South Central is a nonprofit matching volunteer pilots who give up their time and out of pocket expenses to fly patients to medical appointments who would otherwise not be able to go.
Northwest Arkansas - A frequent flyer of more than 30 years, Don Cope took his passion for planes to a new height in helping others following a safety seminar.

That's when he discovered Angel Flight South Central.

Don Cope, a pilot with Angel Flight South Central said, "The official mission is we fly anybody who needs free air transportation from one location to another. But it's typically for medical treatment."

Founded back in 1990, the nonprofit matches volunteer pilots who give up their time and out of pocket expenses to fly patients to appointments who would otherwise not be able to go.

Cope explains, "I thought gosh that's fantastic. I can practice flying, exercise the airplane and I can help somebody else out."

In 2013, they flew nearly 1,100 missions in the 5 state region with about 100 in Arkansas alone.

One of those patients is 81-year-old Jo Ann Hoffmann who needed multiple eye surgeries in Little Rock.

Jo Ann Hoffmann, who got help from Angel Flight said, "Angel Flight has given me the freedom to go, it has saved me money that I did not have."

Rather than drive several hours away and back, Hoffmann has flown thanks to Angel Flight.

"The hurt that I have had in my life has been somewhat healed by their giving. I have never seen such giving people," said Hoffmann.

While those on the receiving end are grateful for the help they're given, they also want others to know about Angel Flight.

Hoffmann said, "It is a marvelous opportunity, it is available to all rich, poor, young, old. It's a God send."
