SPRINGDALE -- Police said a man kidnapped and raped a 13-year-old girl playing on a playground at Jones Elementary Sunday. According to the police report, witnesses said Isidro Vargas-Araujo, 21, walked up to the girl, took her hand, and forcibly led her away from the playground, behind a nearby storage shed. The girl's friends then ran for help and notified her father about what had happened.

A short time later, officers were back near the playground coordinating investigative efforts, when they said Vargas-Araujo and the girl appeared on the south side of the school. The police report said Vargas-Araujo was holding the girl's hand, and when she saw the officers, she ran toward them crying. According to investigators, the girl told them Vargas-Araujo raped her, grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head against the wall.

Police said they found Vargas-Araujo's boxers and shorts behind the storage shed. When detectives interviewed him, they said he admitted he had sex with the girl but that it was consensual. Vargas-Araujo faces charges of rape, kidnapping and battery.
