ROGERS, AR-- Freezing temperatures are sure to pose a problem for pipes. Snow packed roads are not only a problem for drivers, but also for the Rogers Water Utilities. The snow and ice makes it hard for them to get underground.
William Evans, water manager at Rogers Water Utilities said they had more than 850 calls last month. Now he is expecting a lot more as the frigid air rolls into Northwest Arkansas.
He said pipe bursts are preventable. His one main tip for home owners is keep the cold air out.
"For some reason people leave their garage doors open to let a pet out or so they can get the car in and out of the driveway without freezing and you know unfortunately that's where the water freezes," Evans said.
Evans said once the pipes burst in your home, it can cause quite a headache and lots of damage. However, following some simple steps can save you a lot of trouble.
1. Winterize your home. If you plan on leaving the house for an extended period of time, make sure to keep the heat on.
2. Cover crawl spaces, and exposed water lines or hoses.
3. Leave your meter box lids on to avoid freezing
