LITTLE ROCK -- The Arkansas Lottery Commission voted Wednesday to close its three regional claim centers in Springdale, Jonesboro and Camden in an effort to cut costs and free up cash for more scholarships.

According to the commission, the savings measure is expected to free as much as $381,000.

Each claim center will close when its lease runs out. The Springdale center will close effective October 1, while claim centers in Jonesboro and Camden will shutter on November 30. Commissioner Bruce Engstrom said each center employs two people and they will work to find them other job opportunties within the organization.

A spokesperson for the commission said each of regional claim centers saw low traffic from winners with most people claiming prizes checking in directly with the office in Little Rock. Prizes up to $500 can still be claimed at the retailer while anything over that amount can be mailed in or brought directly to the Little Rock Claim Center at Union National Plaza.

The commission is looking into alternative methods, like direct deposit, for prize payment.
