Crews started work Monday on replacing an undersized box culvert at the north entrance of the airport with six large culverts. The creek near the entrance has flooded in the past, sending water on the roadway and slowing down traffic.
"Every once in a while, we'l get a 20, 30 or 100 year rain and what happens is the road and box goes under water," said airport director Kelly Johnson. "When that happens, it drains fairly rapidly but we've had to close the roadway as long as 45 minutes in the past."
Starting next week, traffic will be temporarily relocated and the road will be down to one lane. The project should be finished by August 25th.
