UA Holds Bone Marrow Registry Event in Honor of Employee

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- The University of Arkansas is rallying behind an employee in her battle against cancer.

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- The University of Arkansas is rallying behind an employee in her battle against cancer. University employee Becca Hertzog was diagnosed with leukemia last week.  Wednesday, the university hosted "Be with Becca Day" in honor of Hertzog, who is undergoing chemotherapy and is in need of a bone marrow transplant. "Be with Becca Day" is teaming up with "Be the Match" Foundation to host a bone marrow registry drive in Barnhill Arena this evening. Participants in the drive are placed on a transplant registry.

"It's the opportunity for a minimal amount of pain and intrusion in your normal life to help someone have a second chance at theirs," said volunteer event coordinator Ebbie Thomas. "This drive will not only help her if we find her miracle match, but it will help other Becca's out there in the world."

Being on the registry is not a commitment to donate bone marrow, but if participants are matched with someone who needs as transplant, they will have the opportunity to give.
