Military veterans took on track and field events at John McDonnnell field, and staff put out extra water and Gatorade to keep the participants hydrated.
John Martinez served in the Marines and the National Guard, and says he was using a cane to walk before he started training for the yearly competition.
"Everybody, disabled veterans, whatever disabilities you have, it's open," Martinez says. "If you're looking for the fountain of youth, this is where it's at. You're only gonna stay younger and stronger."
Military veterans 55 and older who receive health care at any VA medical facility are eligible to take part. The event continues Wednesday with cycling, shuffleboard and horseshoes, followed by a medal ceremony.
