MALVERN, AR -- Central Arkansas now has a new dog to help solve arson cases.
A 2-year-old Labrador Retriever named Beth is the newest member of the Malvern Fire Department, but she will also assist other fire investigators across the state.
Beth, a gift from State Farm Insurance, is trained in detecting accelerants used to intentionally start fires.
"What used to take three or four hours as a fire investigator to dig through debris to determine a cause, I can run her through that same area and tell me if an accelerant is or is not present," says Malvern FD's Chris Brewster.
Insurance agents say last year more than 38,000 fires were classified as intentionally set in the United States, causing more than $660 million in property damage.
