Gov't Shutdown Delays "Welcome Home" Ceremony for Local Soldiers

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The government shutdown has forced military officials to cancel a planned “welcome home” ceremony for Arkansas soldiers returning from Afghanistan.

The ceremony honoring the 704th Engineer Company was slated for Wednesday at the Army Reserve Center in Hot Springs.

According to the office of the Secretary of Defense, outreach activities including ceremonies have been called off during the shutdown. That means Wednesday’s ceremony will be delayed.

Normally, the group of soldiers would return together on a charter flight. Because of the shutdown, they’ll be traveling on separate commercial flights.

The majority of the soldiers will be flying into Little Rock later this week.
