GREENWOOD, AR -- The mayor of Greenwood is stepping down.

The city council unanimously accepted Mayor Del Gabbard's resignation in a meeting on Tuesday. Gabbard submitted his resignation letter Monday citing his family, medical problems, and the toll the job has taken on him over the the past two years as his reasons for stepping down.

He wrote that his resignation will be effective immediately, saying in part, "My only regret is that I will not be beside you to see our work through to an end." He signed the letter as a "private citizen."

The city council says they will be discussing possibly holding a special election to fill the position.
