BENTONVILLE, AR-- A week after the University of Arkansas announced record enrollment numbers, Northwest Arkansas Community College is reporting a decrease in preliminary enrollment.

NWACC had an unofficial preliminary count of 8,102 students enrolled on Tuesday, September 3, the 11th day of classes for the fall semester.

That figure is down 316,or 3.8 percent, from the 8,418 preliminary enrollment count on the 11th day in the fall of 2012.

While overall enrollment is down, the college says the number of new freshmen and high school students enrolled has increased.

A spokesperson for NWACC says the decrease is actually a positive indicator for the local economy as college enrollment tends to decrease when the economy improves and more people enter the workforce.
