Olympic sprinter and Fayetteville High School graduate, Wallace Spearmon, donated Asbell $5,000 toward the construction of a new track. The school received a $5,000 Saucony Run for Good grant earlier in the spring and Spearmon matched it.
"If the kids don't run track, it doesn't really matter, as long as they have a positive influence or role model in their lives. You know, someone that can show them the right way if you do make it, hopefully you'll come back and donate to the school and give back to the kids that are coming up," Spearmon said.
By Spring, the new track will be along the perimeter of the existing playground. Spearmon hopes the new track will encourage kids to be active and create another track star in the natural state.
