Police said 35 year old Michael Anthony Ware was shot and killed by an officer Thursday. His name had been withheld until next of kin could be notified. It is not known why the shooting took place.
Jonesboro Police issued a news release, stating officers were investigating the theft of a vehicle on Aggie Road at 10:30 Thursday morning. Shortly after responding, officers were contacted by a man, believed to have stolen the car, who was shot in the chest.
During the investigation, Ware fired at officers near trailer #33. According to the release, Corporal John Eidson fired back at the suspect. Eidson has since been placed on paid administrative leave.
Police said one man, one woman and several children were inside the trailer at the time of the shooting. The man and woman were hurt, but it's not known if they were hurt before or after police arrived on scene.
"I seen a brown headed lady. I know they hit her in the arm because I saw the blood, but other than I didn't see nobody else," said Mindy Bush, who lives at Meadowview. "I felt so scared. I thought stuff like this just happened in movies, not in our little community."
The Jonesboro Police Department's Tactical Unit responded and was able to pull the children to safety from a rear window. Right now, the children appear to have been unharmed.
Officers tried to contact Ware and after some time, SWAT members discovered him dead in the trailer, according to the release.
Jonesboro Police Chief Mike Yates has requested Arkansas State Police to investigate the shooting. Eidson's leave is a standard procedure at JPD.
Aggie Road was shut down for several hours Thursday morning and afternoon.
"I opened my door and there were cops everything and so I knew I just had to get my child out because I see everyone dressed in their uniforms and their guns, and I knew I just had to go," said Madison Purtteman, who lives in Meadow. "When you see big guns everywhere, you don't want your child out, so I just put her in the hall and called my mom and so we just tried to get out of here. She knew two of the police officers, so they came and got me."
