FAYETTEVILLE, AR-- If you're planning on popping corks to ring in the new year, Fayetteville police patrols are suggesting you set yourself up for safety. Corporal Elliot Luebker wants to remind folks to steer clear by driving sober.

"We step up DWI enforcement on new years eve... new years day... there will be extra officers assigned to dwi enforcement looking for intoxicated drivers. If you find yourself going out with a group, it's a good idea to designate someone ahead of time as the sober driver", Luebker said.

However, if you can't put your faith in friends for a ride, folks at the Green Cab Company in Fayetteville are standing by to serve folks in Benton and Washington counties.

"We are getting prepared for the busiest day of the year again. An accident or a DWI is not a good way to start the new year. We're here for you so just give us a call," said cab driver, Kevin Litchfield.

For folks who do drive drunk there are some steep consequences that will set you back.

Corporal Luebker said, "if you are stopped and arrested and charged with dwi, you can face up to one year in jail, 1000 dollars in fines, other court costs, and your license can be suspended."

Also, by driving while intoxicated, you run the risk of changing someone elses life forever. So start your party planning early and filter out the late-night fear of driving drunk so you can just have fun.

"We just want everyone to be safe and responsible and enjoy their new year", said Luebker."
