On Wednesday, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division got information that Leo Mays, 49, had threatened to kill someone in Northwest Arkansas. Investigators say they confirmed those threats and arranged a meeting with Mays. During the meeting Mays explained to the undercover detective how he wanted the person murdered and how much he would pay, according to a report.
"As soon as the undercover detective and the suspect agreed on a plan and a price, the suspect immediately tried to get a hold of the potential victim," said Deputy Keisha Guyll with The Benton County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Guyll said threats are made fairly often, but this case was different.
"He wasn't just mad and upset and showing his emotion. He had a plan A and a plan B," said Guyll. "A lot of people make threats. However, because of this situation behind this threat and the circumstances that involved it, we were fairly confident that it was a legitimate threat."
Working with Bentonville police, detectives then arrested Mayes, where he is being held in the Benton County Jail awaiting bond.
Mays is being charged with Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder.
Mays, who is from Kansas City, was in the area for a scheduled court hearing on a previous drug-related arrest.
