President Obama is keeping an eye on Washington, D.C... As bipartisan House and Senate negotiators have reached deal on a new budget plan to avoid another government shutdown. The two-year deal would set spending levels, reduce the deficit, and relieve arbitrary forced spending cuts scheduled to hit early next year. The deal must still pass the House and Senate.
Thousands of South Africans, world leaders, and celebrities gathering in Johannesburg to bid farewell to Nelson Mandela. While there was sadness over the loss of the leader, the atmosphere was more like a celebration. The memorial brought people together-- if only for the moment, including President Obama, who shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro.

More than 200,000 have signed up for a one way ticket to Mars. The Mars One Foundation says it has found suppliers for an unmanned mission launching in 2018. They will select just four Earthlings to colonize the red planet. If all goes well, the first pioneers could land on mars in 2025.
