Miley Cyrus taking center stage on "Saturday Night Live." The singer poked fun at the controversy over her VMA performance. She's also getting buzz from her spoof of "We Can't Stop" where she portrays Michelle Bachman and pokes fun at the government for shutting down.

The first winners of the annual Nobel Prizes announced Monday. The 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof. They were honred for their discovery of machinery regulating vesicle traffic within cells.

An out-of-control monster truck slams into a crowd of spectators in Chihuahua, Mexico. At least eight people were killed. Eighty others were injured, with dozens of people in serious condition. The accident happened on Saturday.

Today marks the 12th year anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan. On October 7th, 2001 the U.S. led, "Operation Enduring Freedom" began with allied air strikes on Taliban and Al Qaeda targets. This came just months after the September 11th attacks the U.S. government linked to Al-Qaeda.

As we enter day 7 of a partial government shutdown, there was little progress over the weekend. And now attention is turning toward the next looming deadline. On October 17, the u.S. Will officially reach its cap on borrowing.
