Tragedy Strikes Bentonville Family a Day After Christmas

MCDONALD COUNTY, MO-- Tragedy struck a local family one day after Christmas when a traffic accident claimed the lives of two Bentonville girls and injured four others.
MCDONALD COUNTY, MO-- Tragedy struck a local family one day after Christmas when a traffic accident claimed the lives of two Bentonville girls and injured four others. It happened Thursday afternoon on Interstate 49 in Pineville, Missouri. According to the Missouri State Highway Department, three cars were involved. Investigators say a truck changed lanes in front of another truck, causing the second truck to rear-end it. The rear-ended truck then crossed into the right lane and hit a van carrying the family from Bentonville. Troopers say their van ran off the road and flipped.

The Bentonville School District has confirmed to KNWA and Fox24 that Bethany Boxx, 20, and Katelyn Boxx, 16, died from their injuries. Bethany graduated from Bentonville High School last year. Katelyn was a 10th grader at the high school. Gracen Boxx, 18, is currently an 11th grader at Bentonville High School. She was air lifted to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, where she is in serious condition. The girls' parents, Janet and David Boxx, were taken to Mercy Hospital in Bentonville and are expected to recover. A 20-year-old family friend in the car was airlifted to Mercy hospital in Springfield and is also expected to recover. According to the accident report, he was the only one in the van not wearing a seat belt. Troopers say they tested the drivers in the two trucks for alcohol. Meanwhile, the investigation into exactly what caused the crash is ongoing.

The Bentonville School District is preparing ahead of time for grieving students to return to school on January 6. Superintendent Mike Poore tells us the district has notified all staff members and counselors of the tragedy. They will have grief counselors on hand when students return to class. He says the district is 'stunned and grieving' for the family and the community's loss.
