The victory gives White a 1-0 lead in the second best-of-five Red-White series. Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Freshman RHP James Teague will start for White while freshman righty Alex Phillips will start for Red.
The White team had its best offensive game of the Red-White series so far, scoring 10 runs and pounding out 10 hits. Four different players had multiple hits in the game, led by Wernes, who had a game-high three hits with two RBI and two runs scored. Eagan, Taccolini and Wilkerson each had two hits. Eagan added three RBI in the victory.
Tre Edwards had two hits and a RBI to lead the Red team offensively. Andrew Benintendi reached base all four times, going 1-for-1 with three walks, a RBI and two runs scored.
Along with his pair of hits, Taccolini also earned the win on the mound, working four innings and giving up two runs. Zach Jackson took the loss for Red after allowing four runs on four hits in three innings.
White struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first as Wilkerson hit a two-out RBI double and Eagan drove in a run with a RBI single. Red answered with a run of its own in the first on a groundout to third by Matt Brown.
White stretched the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third and two-out, two-RBI triple from Eagan plated Wilkerson and Tyler Spoon. Another run crossed the plate in the fourth on a RBI single by Taccolini. Red got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single to left by Edwards.
White broke the game open with four runs in the top of the sixth. The first two runs of the inning scored on a single by Wernes. Josh Alberius drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and the fourth run of the inning scored on a wild pitch.
Red was unable to get any closer than six runs the rest of the game as White claimed a 10-4 victory and a 1-0 series lead.
