ROGERS, AR-
In this Pink Courage report, Meet a special young lady from Rogers who decided for her
Sweet 16, the party wasn't about her. It was about making a difference.
As KNWA's Neile Jones explains, when Emily Thompson learned her aunt was fighting breast cancer, she wanted to do something.
"I just love her, She is just always there for me if need something.", Thompson explains.
But soon the roles would reverse..with Emily knowing her aunt needed love and support.
So instead of asking for a car, or clothes, for her Sweet 16, Emily asked for donations to help in the fight against breast cancer.
The excited teen says, "We had 40 people come and so it was just like my friends are so great. And it was just a fun party."
A birthday party celebrating life, hope, and courage.
Thompson says, "I would much rather give to someone than receive a gift. That's always much more fun to see how much they like it because it just makes you feel good inside."
And when she called her Aunt, Michelle Neddler with the news,"I couldn't say anything. I was so emotional. All l I could do was smile and talk to her later when I got my emotions in check, but what an amazing thing for a 16 year old to do on her birthday."
And the teen who says she plans to do even more down the road believes you can help others celebrate their next birthday...Simply by joining the fight
"They can always contact Susan G Komen. It's pretty easy to get through to them. It wasn' t hard for us. We just decided to do it."
And as her Aunt explains, "She's not just helping me with her donation. She's helping a lot of women here in Northwest Arkansas."
And teaching others a little something about giving back and paying it forward.
Emily plans to participate in this years Komen Ozark Race For The Cure with her Aunt Emily.
The teenager is wanting to encourage others to make a difference and join the fight as well. To sign up for the race, or lean more about how you can get involved, click here
