Highway Department Stands Down for Safety

FORT SMITH -- The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) launched their inaugural "Stand Down for Safety Day.
FORT SMITH -- The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) launched their inaugural "Stand Down for Safety Day.

In 2011, AHTD employee Anderson Williams was killed while working on highway 79 in Pine Bluff. Stand Down for Safety Day was set aside in his honor to emphasis Safety for highway department employees.

"The importance of safety is that it can cost you your life," Safety Inspection Officer Carroll Lathan says. "Cause a lot of pain and suffering and it's just something that we have to adhere to everyday. And we could do it right everyday but one and that’s why safety is priority one at the Highway Department."

The department holds employee seminars and hosts hands on inspections to reemphasize all aspects of safety procedures.
