Ukraine's military says two of its jets were shot down over eastern Ukraine today - not far from where Malaysia Airlines flight 17 was brought down last week. Pro-Russian rebels are claiming responsibility. According to the Ukrainian military press office, an air defense system shot down the jets after the pilots completed a task.
The pilots reportedly ejected. No word on their condition.
Forty-seven people were killed and 11 injured in Wednesday's plane crash on one of Taiwan's Penghu Islands, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported. The crash of the twin-engine turboprop plane happened outside magong airport at about 7 p.m. CNN affiliate ETTV is reporting that the plane crashed into a residential building. Witnesses described seeing homes on fire, the affiliate said. The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known. Some media reports said the plane was making a crash landing prompted by strong winds from typhoon Matmo, which hit Taiwan early Wednesday.
GM is recalling more than 700,000 cars and trucks. The company made the announcement today. GM says the problems range from a broken screw that could cause front seats to move up and down freely to problems with some welds to problems with the power steering. GM said it is aware of two crashes and three injuries, but no deaths associated with the problems. GM has now recalled nearly 30 million vehicles since the start of the year, by far a record for any automaker and more than half the vehicles recalled by the industry as a whole.
