ROGERS, Ark. – Former University of Arkansas women’s golfer and current world No. 1 Stacy Lewis fired a final round 65 winning the Walmart NW Arkansas LPGA Championship presented by P&G at Pinnacle Country Club Sunday.
The Woodlands, Texas, native was tied for 34th after the first round 70 but carded 66-65 for a 201 and a one-stroke lead. It is her third win this season and her first victory on one of her former home courses.
Lewis began her day six-under and opened with a birdie on the first hole. She added birdies on the fifth and six holes moving to nine-under. She would bogey nine and turn eight-under for the three-day even.
Lewis owned the back nine with birdies on 11, 15, 16 and 18 as she moved to 12-under. She went into the clubhouse with a one-stroke lead and had to wait for a pair of players to finish behind her, either of whom could have forced a playoff.
“It’s so hard to play here,” Lewis said. “It is so much harder than people think. I can tell you I was more nervous here than I was at the U.S. Open last week and that’s how much this place means to me. The fans today, it was unreal. I’ve never heard fans that loud and it was really special to win here.”
Current Razorback Gabriela Lopez finished her second round this morning after weather chased players from the course on Saturday. Lopez fired rounds of 70-72-71=213 and tied for 57th overall.
Former Razorback and current professional player Emily Tubert missed the cut shooting 74-78=152 for the first two rounds.
