Strong Showing by No. 3 Razorbacks at Drake Relays

The University of Arkansas men’s track and field team had a strong showing at the Drake Relays on Friday, qualifying in three preliminary events and earning two runner-up finishes that rank in the nation’s top 10.

DES MOINES, Iowa. – The University of Arkansas men’s track and field team had a strong showing at the Drake Relays on Friday, qualifying in three preliminary events and earning two runner-up finishes that rank in the nation’s top 10.

In his first 110-meter hurdle performance this season, Omar McLeod won his heat with a time of 13.90 to qualify for the finals on Saturday. It was the first of three automatic qualifiers for the Razorbacks on Friday. McLeod will compete in the finals of the 110 hurdles Saturday at approximately 2:40 p.m.

McLeod ran the first leg of the men’s 4x100-meter relay, followed by Jarrion Lawson, Neil Braddy and Curtis Brown on the anchor leg. The quartet finished in the front of their heat with a qualifying time of 39.86. The men’s 4x400-meter relay team of Eric Janise, Travis Southard, Lawson and Braddy also won their heat for an automatic advance to the finals with a time of 3:07.12. The finals in the 4x100 will take place Saturday at 3:20 p.m., followed the 4x400 at approximately 3:50 p.m.

Raymond Higgs made a huge final leap of 25-4 in the long jump, earning a runner-up finish with a season-best performance. The mark moves Higgs into the top 10 and went down as one of only three 25-foot jumps of the day.  The Razorbacks earned another runner-up finish in pole vault with a season-best clearance of 18-5 by Andrew Irwin. With Friday’s performance, Irwin now ranks No. 2 in the NCAA.

Cale Wallace, Tomas Squella, Andrew Pisechko and Patrick Rono ran the final event for the Razorbacks on Friday night, finishing in 7:18.82 with an extremely close second-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay.

Prior to Friday’s events, the decathletes kicked off the Drake Relays for Arkansas with top-eight finishes. Nathanael Franks led the Razorback contingent with a third-place finish with 7,107 points followed by Lane Austell in seventh with 6, 681 points.
