University of Arkansas junior Gabriela Lopez and former Razorbacks Stacy Lewis and Emily Tubert have round one of the Walmart NW Arkansas LPGA Championship in the books at Pinnacle Country Club Friday.

Lopez, a Mexico City, Mexico, native, opened with a one-under 70 in the first round. She tallied three birdies and three bogeys for the round and is tied for 43rd overall.

Lewis is also tied for 43rd with a one-under 70.  She had a couple putts role by and, after bogies on the second and fourth holes, she played the final 14 holes three-under for the day.

Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native, was up-and-down on the course.  She opened with a birdie on the second hole, one of two birdies in her round.  Tubert turned at plus-two and finished plus three with a 74.

“Today was a really special day for our program,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor. “To have three current and former Razorbacks in the field at the Walmart NW Arkansas LPGA Championship presented by P&G is amazing.  To see the Razorback fans out there supporting the players is just tremendous.  The atmosphere at the first tee, the 17 hole – all of it – is just such a special opportunity for all of them and it just shows you what a great support system we have here in the Northwest Arkansas community and on our campus.

“For Gaby it was a really great round of golf with three birdies and two bogeys,” said Estes-Taylor. “I’m really proud of her.  It’s fun to see how much she has matured over the last year and how she has improved and more confident she has become. For Emily, in her professional debut, it is a little bit of a transition.  She had a double on 16 but did some really good things out there as well.  For Stacy, she seems to be really close today.

“As a coach to have three of my players out there is really special.  To have the fans and the support is just, it makes this a week of a lifetime.  I’m so proud to be the leader of our golf team and to have this opportunity.”

Play continues Saturday for all three players with a cut after the second round.
