Ask an Expert: What Are Clinical Trials?

Today's expert is Molly Hansen, research director at the Northwest Arkansas Clinical Trials Center.
What are clinical trials?

"Clinical trials are research studies that must be performed with a new drug in order for it to be approved by the F.D.A. and to then be prescribed by your physician. Almost all drugs are required to go through this process, and volunteers are needed for participation in clinical trials in order to bring new drugs to the market. Without previous volunteers, we wouldn't have access to most of the medications that are on the market today!"

"Currently, studies are being conducted on a a variety of conditions including acne, warts, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis/eczema, rosacea, and hydradenitis suppurativa, and other studies on a variety of other dermatological conditions," Hansen said.
