More Tips on Sensitive Skin Precautions

Check out some more tips to help protect your skin during these cold winter months.
SENSITIVE SKIN PRECAUTIONS

1.    Use fragrance-free versions of products such as shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, fabric softeners, bath soap, body lotions, face creams, make-up, deodorant, and perfume or cologne.  Fragrances are one of the top triggers for eczema breakouts, and they are found in almost everything (unless specifically noted otherwise).  Every product you use on your skin or in your laundry should clearly state that it is fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, sensitive skin, etc.

Contrary to popular belief, “natural” products that contain substances such as plant extracts, etc. are NOT good for patients with sensitive skin.  In fact, some of the most irritating and allergic substances are derived from plants, including fragrances.

2.    Avoid any plant-based products, even if they are considered fragrance-free.  Fragrances are all derived from plant extracts, and allergy seasons are triggered by pollen, which is derived from plants.  Plants are can be very irritating to the eczema/allergy patient. 

3.    Use a mild soap such as:  Dove for Sensitive Skin (regular Dove is scented), Vanicream, CeraVe, Cetaphil, Basis, or Free & Clear.

4.    Take short, lukewarm showers.  In general, the hotter the shower, the more your skin will dry out after bathing.  The same goes for washing your hands, especially during the winter.

5.    After bathing, don’t completely dry your skin.  With the water still left on your skin, use this to rub in a bland, fragrance-free emollient (moisturizer), such as:  Cetaphil, CeraVe, Lubriderm, Eucerin, Aquaphor or Vaseline.  This will trap extra moisture in your skin.

6.    Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!  This may be required 2-3 times per day during the colder weather months.  Decreased humidity in the air, along with the heaters running in our homes, causes significant loss of moisture from our skin.  Also, as our bodies age, our skin becomes drier and thinner, which increases the demand for moisturization. 

7.    Run a cool-mist humidifier in your room at night to add moisture back into the air (especially during the winter months).

8.    Use laundry detergents that are “free” and “clear.”  We recommend “All Free”, “Cheer Free” or “Tide Free.”  The package needs to clearly state that it is fragrance- and dye-free.
