FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) -- More than 70,000 people in our area face hunger every day, and that need is increasing. The Northwest Arknasas Food Bank is offering a way in which you can help in its mission to nourish our communities, simply by having a good time yourself.
"There is a tremendous amount of money in this area, but there's also a tremendous amount of need," NWA Food Bank President and CEO Kent Eikenberry pointed out from the organization's food warehouse in Bethel Heights.
Though the Northwest Arkansas community celebrates its many opportunities, there are tens of thousands of people of all ages who are food insecure.
"Food insecure is defined as not having the resources to make sure you can put a nutritious meal on the table," Eikenberry explained.
That is where the NWA Food Bank comes in. Eikenberry says the nonprofit has provided millions of pounds of food to those in need for the past three decades.
"In celebration of that 30 year anniversary, Octagon and the Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G has agreed to give us $30,000 dollars to help us celebrate our birthday," Eikenberry said.
To make that happen, three dollars from each ticket sold to Bite NWA will go to the nonprofit, thanks to the generosity of those partners.
"The tournament has been a a great partner, gosh, since the beginning of the tournament," Eikenberry shared. "... they have donated over six and a half million pounds of food."
Eikenberry says, though the contributions haven't been earmarked just yet, it is likely much of it will go toward one of their biggest needs.
"We're buying about, just under, a million dollars [worth of food] a year in order to supplement what's donated to us," Eikenberry explained. "So, that's by far our number one expense."
Eikenberry also encourages any folks at the LPGA tournament to drop by and visit the NWA Food Bank volunteers working the concessions stand at Hole 15.
