((KNWA/CNN))-- Texas Governor Rick Perry is ordering 1,000 National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico to deal with the surge of unaccompanied minors.

The Republican has been an outspoken proponent of securing the border.

While both Perry and President Barack Obama have the authority to deploy national guard troops, whomever authorizes it has to pay for it, which means the state of Texas will have to foot the bill.

Code named 'Operation Strong Safety,' the deployment will begin immediately.

The upgraded security proposal is expected to cost about $12 million a month.
